How will I be remembered?
For a bunch of reasons (mainly emotional immaturity) it’s not a question I’ve wrestled with much.
However after attending a memorial for my Dad at Sacred Heart Catholic School & Sixth Form Camberwell - the secondary school where he was a long standing headteacher - I’ll admit to being blown away by what I saw and heard.
Former colleagues and pupils lined up to express their thanks for what my Dad taught them, how he had supported them and how he made their time in the school that bit lighter and brighter.
The school’s current headteacher, Richard Lansiquot - who my Dad had hired years ago - shared he’d only been teaching at the school for a few months before his own father passed away. At the funeral (at a church up in Kilburn) Richard turned around during the service only to see my Dad there. He’d never met Richard’s family before but wanted to show support and pay his respects.
Richard then read out the final message my Dad had sent him earlier this year, just after the school’s latest positive report was publicised. “You and the school are flying high, Richard. I’m so proud. Keep it going. Garvster”
Remembering a great man. So great that Camberwell is now home to “The Colin Garvey Hall” - as seen in these pictures of my sisters and I unveiling it - and please note I am not wearing trainers. The ultimate sign of respect!

On Friday 14th November, the school hall was officially renamed the Colin Garvey Hall, in honour of our much beloved former headteacher who passed away earlier this year.
Mr Garvey's family were in attendance for the ceremony, along with many current and former teachers and pupils. Mr Garvey's family unveiled the sign outside the hall and a commemorative plaque inside the hall. Among those who paid moving tributes to Mr Garvey were former headteachers Dame Sally Coates, Mr Cefai and our current headteacher Mr Lansiquot.
Head students Yazmin and Mark also spoke brilliantly and Mme Quinn made sure the Hall looked beautiful, while Mr Thompson, Mme Tran and Father Andrew Ebrahim SDB masterminded a beautiful service. All in all it was a fitting tribute to a great and much loved man, father, grandfather, teacher and headteacher.
