Clapham Old Xaverians kicked off their cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over league rivals Hammersmith in a tense first-round clash.
With ambitions to lift the trophy, Clapham faced a tough test, fielding a bare 11 due to missing key players.
The game burst into life with Clapham creating early chances through Aren Stephens, but they couldn’t find the net. Hammersmith, playing slick passing football, dominated possession and pinned Clapham back for much of the first half.
Their pressure paid off when a poorly cleared free kick was headed home, putting Clapham 1-0 down. Liam T’s booking for late challenges forced his substitution to avoid a red card, while a golden opportunity to level was squandered in the final minute of the half when a winger shot instead of passing to an open Stephens.
Despite the deficit, Clapham’s defensive duo of Dom and Trotty stood firm, supported by the energetic wing-back brothers Alfie and Louis. However, Clapham’s passing lacked precision, leaving them trailing 1-0 at the break but confident of a comeback.
The second half mirrored the first, with both sides evenly matched but few clear chances. Clapham looked the more likely to score, buoyed by superb saves from keeper Sam. Their persistence was rewarded when a wide free kick was swung in, and Harty rose highest to head home a brilliant equalizer, making it 1-1.
With no winner after 90 minutes, the game headed to extra time—a scenario Clapham dreaded with tired legs and no substitutes.
Extra time saw Clapham’s fatigue show, with fouls piling up and chances gifted to Hammersmith, who failed to capitalize. Ashley Snadden’s tireless work in midfield kept Clapham in the fight, while tactical switches moved Aren to the wing and Harty up top. Cramp plagued several players, but Clapham’s resilience shone through. In the final seconds, with just five ticks left on the referee’s watch, a curled free kick found Trotty, who headed into the bottom left corner to spark wild celebrations.
The 2-1 win, sealed by set-piece prowess, sends Clapham into the next round. While their reliance on long throws and dead balls secured the victory, Clapham know sharper passing and better performances are essential for a successful season.
Up the Clapham!
