COXA Vets v Fulham Compton Vets
By Frank Barretta
A Sunday game at Norbury for the first time in years saw Clapham take on A Sunday game in the LOB Vets Cup, the Vets 3rd competitive game of the year
14 players named in the squad and all 14 turned up to a rain lashed Norbury, bringing back many memories of wet and windy days on the hallowed turf. Sliding tackles surely the order of the day (maybe not Eddie O’Brien reffing!)
Goalkeeper : Micky Links (Friend from Old Pied Bullians)
Defenders: James Price, Stuart Greaves, Dave Halpenny, TG and John Norton
Midfielders: Peter Codd, Mike O’Flynn , Macca, Giggsy, Bernie Mensah
Strikers: Roops, Dave Faulkner and Colin Brown©
The eagle eyed amongst you will notice only 2 players from the recent Saturday Vets Squads in the Sunday squad.
The game started well with Clapham very much on the front foot. Plenty of possession and the game being played in the Fulham half for most of the first 15 minutes. A few half chances in the box but nothing to show for our endeavours. Surely only one team in the tie!
As time went on Fulham came into the game, Clapham wasting possession too often and lack of concentration from a corner saw a snatched shot from Fulham find the back of the Clapham net.
The second half saw Fulham gain an early second goal and Clapham had it all to do.
Clapham continued to try and get back into the game, but unable to find that final telling ball in the box.
Fulham scored a third when a shot by their striker was heading straight into the Clapham keepers arms only to be deflected by the outstretched arm of Mick O’Flynn into the top corner, and with time ticking away Fulham scored a fourth.
In true Clapham tradition the guys never gave up and with minutes left to play forced a justly deserved consolation goal to deprive Fulham of a clean sheet.
The team came off knowing we could have done better, but considering this was the first time this group of guys had played as a team against another “regular” VETs opposition many positives were still taken from the game.
Thanks to all the guys for the time, commitment and endeavours on the day. Thanks to Eddie for reffing the game in his usual uncompromising style.
