Scotty's been out Roamin' In The Gloamin' in the Scottish Borders.

Hello All

Just watched the Scottish demolition of Gibraltar in Eyemouth [Scottish Borders] - but on the way I could resist popping in and paying homage to an Old Old Xaverian.

It was a 12 mile detour off our route North[to Sunderland, Mell Knolls Cemetery to find Private George Herlihy [he's on the Roll of Honour WWI in the Chapel].

It was raining and miserable - and after 1/2 hour I'd had enough - nothing was marked... but just as I was leaving I saw an old rusty sign on the ground R.C. Section!

And there was George [photo of his stone attached!] - a simple thought and prayer and off I went - mission accomplished ....

George was born on 26th June 1900 and was at the College from 1913 to 1916 - George went straight into the Army and died at Mons on 19th November 1918 - only 19 years old.

He was buried in the family plot in Sunderland by his mother who wrote "In ever loving memory and affectionate remembrance of my dear George - until we meet - Mum"

George died of his wounds EIGHT DAYS after the War ended after fighting with the Sherwood Foresters of the Notts and Derby Regiment

His Mum Lauretta Adelaide Herlihy had lived in 47 Deauville Road Clapham - he was buried in Sunderland exactly a year after his death! He was awarded the Mons Star

I enjoyed my day - off for a Chinese [Scottish]

Scotty
