When it comes to cup ties all that matters is getting through to the next round, so I have to give the boys credit for getting the job done. The performance however, was not our finest. We have a habit of winning games by 4 or 5 and then dropping a 2/10 performance the week after. We were excellent last week, we didn't give the oppo a second to relax on the ball and our intensity was great. This week however, the press was near enough non existent, the passing was sloppy and the intensity was poor. It was one of those games that you knew was in the bag from the first 5-10 mins, the oppo really didn't have much to offer and the boys didn't have to get out of first gear.
We took the lead through a confidently struck Jacob penalty after Barry Michael was tripped in the box. It was a stat padding performance for Jacob who ended with 2 goals and an assist. Jacob looks good to post impressive numbers this year taking all set pieces and loving a long range effort. His delivery for Liam's goal was pinpoint and Liam finished neatly with a back post header. It is always a good contest between bookings and goals for Liam, the score is currently 1-1.
Sam was clearly carrying a knock from early on but continued to look threatening whenever he got the ball, he ended with a goal and an assist and for most of the game was struggling to sprint, great effort from him. Tom also looked threatening throughout the game and was unlucky to not get on the score sheet hitting the post from a 1 on 1 with the keeper. We welcomed back Ben O'Brien after his trip away to Bali to find himself, unfortunately he couldn't find a touch on Saturday and was branded the white Sissoko by spectators, a name he will want to shift in a hurry. A mention for Matt Drury, who has filled in at LB well in the absence of long term LB Conor Keyboard. Keyboard will be sweating as he waits to see if he has regained his spot this weekend.
Overall a very dull game with little to report. Fulham Compton at home next week so hopefully we can continue our fast start to the season.
Up the Clapham.
COXA VETS
A great result on the 16th September for the COXA Vets against Peckham Town (the opposition that provided our league title clinching win last season at Norbury). Goals came from Martin McGourty, David Broomfield and an OG. Against some good opposition and on a good playing surface in Dulwich this should really get our season going. Welcome to Ben, Matt and Roy who made their first appearances for COXA. A number of excellent individual performances and a great team effort. For the records, the goal in our 3-1 defeat to Catford Wanderers on the 9th September was scored by Le-Roy Bolt. This was another great effort in the circumstances as after multiple injuries in the first half, COXA played the whole of the second half out against superior numbers. Special mention to Colin Brown who after the longest warm up in COXA history and several gallons of oil and deep heat applied still managed to pull a calf muscle after 10 minutes - we hope you are on the mend Colin.
