COXA Golf Day
Surrey Downs Golf Course Friday 22nd June 2018
After a gap of 11 years, Tom Judge won the Stan Miller Memorial Trophy for a second time. Playing off 17, Tom played some wonderful golf to return with 42 stapleford points. Along with the trophy, Tom took back to Swindon a bottle of Champagne and the special COXA Golf tie.
We could not have picked a better day to play – blue sky and a pleasant 22°C. The course was in good condition, but any venture off the fairway inevitably ended up with a lost ball, as the rough was a little too difficult. Aaron O’Sullivan however had no problem with the course and recorded his best ever score of 40 points to win the Guests’ Stapleford competition. Mick, his dad, certainly has not taken long to learn the game, we all remember his first game a couple of years ago and today he scored 33 points.
Andy McDonald won the Eamon Taggart ‘nearest the pin’ Memorial Trophy with an excellent strike on the 160-yard second hole. Bob McGill also hit a great shot to win the Guests’ ‘nearest the pin’ competition. The longest drive was won by John Flynn with an incredible strike that must have been close to 300 yards.
The team competition is proving to be very popular with everyone and it was great that at long last Frank Barretta has come out best on the count back rule. His team of John Flynn and Andy McDonald won with 86 points from Team Leathem.
John Pettley working in China and unable to play, very generously sponsored the 7 bottles of Prosecco.
I think everyone enjoyed the day, I certainly did and think the fun and camaraderie within COXA at the moment is brilliant.

p.s. With Petters help and all those who played, we were able to make a Just Giving payment of £210 to Great Ormond Street Hospital for the support and research of Congenital Melanocytic Naevi Syndrome (CMN)
